Pioneering in Victoria : the Kirby family. 1979 May.

A brief history of the Kirby family, 1730-1937. William Kirby settled in Port Phillip District with his family 1840. He came from Northamptonshire, England (born 1800, died Saltwater River, Vic. 1863). He had a farm at Whittlesea, Vic. and was the author of Cultivation of the soil, published 1862. Also describes the careers of William Kirby's children, including James (1862-1904) who was the author of Old Times in the bush of Australia (1895). History based on some notes provided by Bill Payne.

John Percy Holroyd, bookman, was born at Moonee Ponds in Victoria in 1911. He was 17 when he began his impressive career in bookselling, starting work in 1928 in the educational department of Robertson & Mullens in Melbourne. He later managed Swain's Bookshop, the rarebooks department of Angus & Robertson in Sydney, where he remained for five years until he retired in 1978 and returned to Melbourne.
